Christmas in July is an extra opportunity for students to learn a Christmas piece, especially if they are already taking lessons during the summer. Sure, it might be more exciting to do so in late November through mid-December, when you’re getting in the mood for the holidays.
However, after seeing so many students working on sonatinas for the November festival and regular repertoire for the December recital, I see Christmas pieces sometimes getting pushed to the side. If you have some time, now is a great opportunity!
Christmas In July is a Real Thing
It means different things to different people, but it tilts toward the secular, not the sacred celebration. Of course, Wikipedia has a page explaining it all.
Christmas Lead Sheets
If you have a year or so of lessons under your belt, and are in at least a Level 2 method book, perhaps try a lead sheet. I’ve created a lead sheet demonstration using Jingle Bells, but the possibilities are similar for many other pieces you select.
The link below goes to Michael Kravchuk’s website, which has many choices of public domain Chrimstas songs.
Why Not Try to Learn Jingle Bells?
Online Resources on MMS
I also have a decent-size list of site-licensed resources that I’ve loaded onto MyMusicStaff. Since they are only licensed for my students, it made sense to post them there instead of on my own site.
- Log into MyMusicStaff as you would to reschedule a lesson.
- Using the vertical icon bar along the left side of the screen, click the download icon Online Resources.
- Using the search box at the top right of the screen, type “Christmas” and click Search.
Want More Christmas?
I purposely meant to keep this light, but if you’re interested to see more resources, including sheet music to buy, here is the blog post I feature closer to the holidays.
